Using Digital Connectivity

The use of digital technology can ensure your organisation is able to function on some level, and in many cases, can replace a lot of the activities you currently undertake.

There are a whole host of different platforms to assist you in managing your organisation. In an area as large as the Highlands, digital technology can become a necessity so learning how to make the most of it will hopefully ease some of the pressures facing your organisation.

Now that millions of people around the globe are practicing social distancing thanks to the current coronavirus pandemic, digitally keeping in touch is more important than ever. This includes facilitating video meetings with your coworkers while you work remotely or just checking in with your friends and family.

Here is a selection of digital solutions:

Slack

Free for charities, the secure chat service allows users to be grouped by teams. Chat boxes between staff can be used for chatting and file-sharing – they are also easy to use – files can be dragged and dropped. The chat app can also be downloaded to mobile phones, allowing staff to be contactable wherever they are.

Microsoft Teams

At its most basic level, Teams is a messaging tool that enables text communications between users, whether they are in the same office or work remotely. It supports group chat rooms with threaded conversations, as well as private messages between individuals. Teams has a very useful video conferencing feature and the function to collaborate with team members on shared documents.

Zoom

Is a web-based video conferencing tool with a local, desktop client and a mobile app that allows users to meet online, with or without video. Zoom users can choose to record sessions, collaborate on projects, and share or annotate on one another's screens, all with one easy-to-use platform. Zoom can be used for free if you register on their site.

Google Hangouts

Google Hangouts is a free chat, audio calling, and video calling service. Using it is relatively straightforward. All you need to get started is a Google account. Classic Google Hangouts lets users message either one-on-one or in groups of up to 150 people. They can also video chat with other individuals or in groups of up to 10.

Skype

WhatsApp

WhatsApp Messenger or simply WhatsApp is a freeware, cross-platform messaging and Voice over IP (using either 3g, 4g or WiFi) service owned by Facebook. It allows users to send text messages and voice messages, make voice and video calls, and share images, documents, user locations, and other media.

FaceTime

Facetime is a videotelephony product developed by Apple. FaceTime is available on supported iOS mobile devices and Macintosh computers that run Mac OS X 10.6.6 and later. FaceTime supports any iOS device with a forward-facing camera and any Macintosh computer equipped with a FaceTime Camera.
