Volunteer mentors sought as mentoring programme launches at Thurso High School

Adults across Thurso and Caithness are being encouraged to become volunteer mentors as award-winning mentoring charity MCR Pathways launches its programme at Thurso High School this August.

The programme will help more young people build confidence, raise aspirations and realise their full potential through the support of a trusted adult volunteer mentor. To support the launch, MCR Pathways is now recruiting adults from Thurso, Wick and communities across Caithness to give just one hour a week to help transform a young person's future.

Abby Lucas, MCR Pathways Programme Manager for Highland and the Western Isles, said: "We're delighted to be bringing the MCR Pathways mentoring programme to Thurso High School. Across our Highland schools, we see every day the positive impact a trusted adult can have. Having someone to listen, encourage and support pupils as they navigate exams, make decisions about further education or careers, and prepare for life beyond school can make a lasting difference to their confidence and future."

Volunteer mentors spend just one hour a week during term time meeting with a young person in their local secondary school. No specialist qualifications are required, with full training and ongoing support provided throughout the mentoring journey. Mentoring is designed to fi t around work, family and other commitments, recognising that life can sometimes get in the way.

The programme has been declared a resounding success by many young people taking part. “My mentor has a lot of life experience, and has pushed me to try my best no matter the circumstances.” said one young person who has benefited from MCR Pathways’ mentoring programme.

“Having a mentor is great for lots of things like confidence,having someone to talk to and to help decide career paths and make choices.”

A total of 275 young people participated in MCR Pathways mentoring sessions within the Highlands over the last academic year. In the charity's latest participants’ survey, 99 per cent of young people said their mentor was a good role model, 98 per cent said mentoring helped them become the best version of themselves, and 95 per cent said the experience improved their confidence.

Abby Lucas added: "Communities across Caithness have a proud tradition of looking out for one another, and we're continually inspired by local people who choose to give something back. Becoming a mentor is a rewarding opportunity to help a young person realise their potential. You just need the willingness to listen, encourage and be there consistently."

Simply giving one hour a week can help a young person build confidence, believe in themselves and see new possibilities for their future. We'd encourage adults from every background and profession to consider becoming a mentor and make a lasting difference in their local community."
