Volunteer Driver

Thinking of becoming a Volunteer Driver for South West Ross Community Car Scheme? Our passengers come from a broad cross-section of the community and use the scheme for a wide variety of reasons. As well as regular passengers, we receive “one-off” requests from people who are temporarily without transport. Journeys may be local or longer hospital runs, which can involve waiting while an appointment takes place and then bringing the passenger home. Our volunteer telephonists or Coordinator will contact you with the passenger’s details, travel time, pick-up point and destination. You can then decide whether you are able to do the run. If you cannot or do not wish to do it, just say “Sorry, no”—you are not obliged to explain why. You will only drive when you want to and when it fits your schedule. Some passengers may need a little assistance, such as a supporting arm from their door to the car, help getting in or out, or help with luggage. Good timekeeping is important, as passengers may become anxious if the car does not arrive when expected. Drivers must be aged 25–80, have held a full driving licence for five years and provide two character references. You will need your own car with valid tax, MOT, fully comprehensive insurance covering volunteer driving and breakdown recovery. SWRCCS will reimburse you for every mile you do on behalf of the Car Scheme and mileage expenses are paid monthly.
