Role Description
Thinking of becoming a Volunteer Telephonist for South West Ross Community Car Scheme?
Our passengers come from a broad cross-section of the community and use the scheme for a wide variety of reasons. As well as regular passengers, we receive “one-off” requests from people who are temporarily without transport. Some passengers may be quite isolated and enjoy having a chat.
As a Telephonist, you will take details of local bookings and contact volunteer drivers to ask if they are available. You will tell the driver who the passenger is, when they wish to travel, and the pick-up point and destination. You may also be asked to call users to see if they are OK. Hospital runs are usually booked through the Coordinator.
You will need access to a telephone. Access to a computer is useful, as lists are sent by email, but this is not essential. Being good at administration and organisation will help you keep track of journeys, drivers and other details, while being a good listener will help when talking through what someone needs. You choose how many shifts you do, and a £5 per diem can be claimed towards additional telephone costs. Two character references are required.
Training Provided:
Instructions are provided on transferring the scheme’s telephone line to your phone and managing bookings. You will receive an “Onwards” list showing journeys that have already been organised or still need to be arranged, along with a driver list containing telephone numbers and the types of journeys each driver is willing to undertake.
A sample script is provided for welfare calls, so you know the types of things to ask. Once your application and references have been completed, you will also receive the Volunteer Manual. The Coordinator is available if you have any questions or would like more information about the role or the scheme’s policies.
