Alex had recently left the Army after 8 years of service, whilst looking for work, he wanted to do something with a purpose. He has always been involved with horses in one way or another and after a conversation with Bridgit, the lady who works at Riding for the Disabled, he agreed to pop along and see how he could help out.
When asked about the impact his role has on those who he works with, Alex said, I am a friendly, cheerful person that can help put people at ease. I know that horses can be scarey and people can be anxious, therefore it is good to support them to relax and enjoy being here.
Volunteering with RDA has given me a feeling of purpose, using the skills that I already have. It has helped me become more resilient, he laughed, especially in the bad weather, when I am putting up poles, fences and gates.
However, over all it is a great experience, I would say just do it, you will meet new people and really make a difference. All you need to do is offer an hour here or there, it is very flexible here but it does help you feel good when you see the impact it has.
